Obsession(s) Of The Day: Lip Balms I’d Die Without

The title of this post may seem melodramatic, but it’s not so far from the truth. Probably the worst thing about winter for me, beauty-wise, is chapped lips. I can’t stand how they feel or how they look. They make kissing my boyfriend annoying and I also feel like everyone is always starring at them, judging me. Too self-absorbed? Maybe. But who doesn’t like soft lips year-round?

I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect chap stick for a while now. I used to use regular ‘ole cherry ChapStick. It was unglamorous, but it was reliable and worked well. However, the cherry scent started to get to me after a while – along with the fact that there’s virtually no SPF there. My lips, besides getting dry and chapped in the winter, also have the unfortunate habit of getting very easily sunburnt in the summer. And if you’ve ever experienced that, you know it’s not fun. So, it’s essential for me to buy lip balm that includes a healthy dose of SPF.

For a while, I used Smith’s Rosebud Salve, and while I adored the pretty packaging, I didn’t quite love the application. It was sticky and sometimes too much for me.

More recently, I discovered Baby Lips by Maybelline and I am pretty much obsessed. Not only do I love, love, love the cute and fun packaging, but these also do amazing things for my lips. My number one favorite is Quenched, but if for some reason it’s not available, I also rely on Peppermint. These little babies make my lips feel so soft and smooth and also give them shine without any actual color. The best bonus? They’re incredibly cheap.

Maybelline Baby Lips

Do yourselves a favor and buy these.

For a long time, I thought that my love for Baby Lips could not be rivaled. I figured I never needed to try a new chap stick or lip balm ever again because my prayers had been answered and my dreams fulfilled. Then, I discovered Sugar.

I actually can’t remember where my Sugar lip treatment came from. I believe my mom gave it to me for Christmas, but I could be wrong – I do know that it was from my mom though. However I got it, I’m glad I did. When I was first presented with the sample sized Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment, I was skeptical. I already had Baby Lips, what more could my lips want? But I tried it and I’m so glad I did. Fresh’s Sugar Lip Treatment is amazing. I have the clear one, which makes my lips look very kissable, but am dying to try one of the tinted versions. These little guys make my lips incredibly soft and they’re not sticky.

Fresh Sugar lip treatment

Love the subtle scent as well.

While the $22.50 price tag is significantly higher than my beloved Baby Lips, I can still safely say that this  is a new staple.

So, what’s your favorite lip balm? Give me some more obsessions!

Sometimes I Hate My Birthday

In a little over a month, on Halloween, I’ll be 25. But I don’t want to talk about that. No, really, I don’t want to talk about it.

When I was a kid, I LOVED my birthday. I had pretty much the best birthday ever, since I was a Halloween baby. Everyone was jealous of me, I got to tell people I was a secret witch, and everyone was always excited to celebrate it since it was also a holiday. Also, my parents threw me the best birthday parties ever. My dad built us spook houses in the unfinished part of our basement, which were legitimately scary since my dad is awesome. Everyone came dressed in costume, my parents bought us all little pumpkins to decorate, and my mom made me cakes shaped like ghosts and pumpkins. The worst Halloween of my life was the Halloween we stopped doing these since we were all getting too “old”.

Now, I kind of hate my birthday. I don’t hate Halloween – it’s the best holiday ever. I just don’t love my birthday.

Here are some reasons I do like my birthday:

1. I get presents. Sorry that’s really superficial. But let’s all admit that it’s the number one reasons birthdays are great, okay?

2. My birthday is on Halloween, which is my favorite holiday, so that means my birthday is my favorite holiday.

3. I get to wear a costume, which is so much more interesting than wearing just another sparkly dress and a tiara.

4. I like seeing who’s going to say happy birthday to me and who’s going to forget about me. True friends vs. fake friends.

5. I can eat candy guilt-free. Which is really more of a reason I love Halloween. So I guess it doesn’t belong here.

Here is a little gem from my 22nd birthday. I was a gypsy and I want to wear that costume every day sometimes.

Here are a few reasons I don’t like my birthday:

1. I’m getting old. It’s depressing.

2. There’s all this pressure on me to do something really fun and awesome and really, I don’t know what to do. So I usually just end up at a bar with my friends who are willing to come out.

3. My birthdays are kind of starting to get unlucky.

  • Last year, we had a freak snowstorm (the only snowstorm of the year had to happen on the night we were celebrating my birthday) and we couldn’t go to the place I really wanted to go to.
  • The year before that, I had tonsilitis and strep throat at the same time, couldn’t drink, had a fever at the bar, was home by 1:00 AM and was also fighting with one of my best friends.
  • For my 21st, I got in a huge fight with two of my best friends, cried at midnight and ended up alone way too early in the night.
  • When I was in high school my parents regularly did not treat me as the birthday princess because they were too focused on making sure my brother didn’t get arrested.

4. I’m getting old. And seriously, it’s depressing.

Maybe my birthdays can stop and only Halloween can continue?

Obsession of the Day: My New Forever 21 Utility Jacket

Okay, honestly? My weekend was totally boring. Besides Friday night, I did basically nothing except nap, read and hang out with my boyfriend. I guess I needed the rest and the blah-ness, considering the last three weekends I was on vacation (does that sentence even make sense?), but it was still not the best time.

The one good thing I DID do was go shopping. I only went into Forever 21, but I scored some really pretty shirts and finally bought something I’ve been searching for for what feels like forever – a green utility jacket.

Yeah, a utility jacket might not sound like a big deal, but trust me… it is. To me, at least. Every fall and every spring, I walk through the streets of New York City and encounter hundreds of green or khaki utility jackets. And every time I see one, I think, “I want that“. At first, I tried to forget about them. But then I started searching for them online – but since I didn’t know the official name for them, I had basically no luck. The ones I did find just weren’t what I was looking for.

Until I found this one:

Forever 21 Utility Jacket

Love 21 Life In Progress Hooded Utility Jacket, $34.50

This jacket is perfect for those in-between months where it’s not cold enough for a winter coat, but it’s not warm enough to wear nothing. Also, it looks pretty awesome in the rain. I’m not sure why, it just does. It’s chic, totally cute, practical and casual all in one. And I’m totally obsessed.

You can buy it on Forever21.com if you love it as much as I do. I know it doesn’t look super special right now, but seriously guys… I am literally SO excited for the day I get to wear it.

Obsession of the Day: Nautical Inspired Jewelry

Anyone who knows me knows that I love the beach. Actually, love might not be a strong enough word. Let’s go with “obsessed with the beach”. I wait approximately 8 months of the year to spend every possible minute I can laying on the beach and soaking up the sun. So, naturally, I love all nautical-inspired things… especially jewelry.

Wearing nautical jewelry during the summer months makes the most sense, obviously, but I love mixing it in during the fall and winter too. When I look at my nautical jewelry around my wrist or neck, I’m reminded of my happy days at the beach and the warm sun. I love it. Here are a few of my favorite nautical jewelry right now:

Ettika Starfish Leather Bracelet, $50

As soon as I saw this Ettika Starfish Leather bracelet on their Facebook page, I knew I had to have it. It comes in a variety of colors, but the blue was my favorite – I love the way it mixes with the gold. This bracelet is casual but still super stylish, and you can wear it with pretty much anything. Plus, I love starfish, so this was definitely a must-have for me.

Gorjana Anchor Bracelet, $50

This Gorjana Anchor bracelet is easily one of my favorite pieces of jewelry – and honestly, I don’t even like gold that much. It’s super small and delicate, but still stands out on your wrist.

Image

Pandora Sea Shell Charm, $65

Yes, I shelled out $65 for this extremely tiny charm for my Pandora bracelet – don’t judge me! It’s one my favorite charms and was totally worth the money. For one thing, I love the touch of gold on my bracelet. For another, every time I look down at it, I smile.

Tiffany’s Flower Charm Necklace

Alright, so maybe this isn’t the most nautical piece, but it reminds me of Hawaii and beach flowers, which is why it’s on here. Honestly, I don’t even think Tiffany’s sells this anymore. I got it from an ex-boyfriend in high school (AKA a few years ago), and it was the one gift from him I didn’t close up in a box when we broke up. I still wear it on an almost daily basis and it has to be one of my favorite pieces of jewelry I own.

What’s your favorite nautical jewelry? Give me some inspiration!

IT’S HERE! The Trailer For Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2!

I will proudly state that I am literally almost in tears over the brand new trailer for the last installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2. I cannot explain how excited I am for this movie to come out.

We have waited for so long for this moment. 10 years, 7 books, and 7 movies so far. I am a firm believer that splitting The Deathly Hallows into two parts was one of the best decisions the movie producers could have made. While I have heard, and can already see, that there are some differences in the biggest and final scene, I am still beyond excited to see this movie. But as much as I’m anticipating the release, I also don’t want it to come out — Harry Potter has been something I have loved and looked forward to for such a long time.

Since I began reading the books when I was only 13 years old (!!!!), I have been completely obsessed with this series. Nothing else I have ever read has consumed me in this way. When I read the books, I become so into them that I can hardly think of anything else. And while I love the books so much more, the movies are also really good. I will literally be in tears the entire time I watch this last movie. I can’t stand to think that there are no more books or movies to look forward to!

Anyway, here’s the reason you’re reading this. The trailer for the best movie of the year:

Obsession of the Day: Essie’s ‘Lapis of Luxury’

Lately I have found myself obsessed with my nails. I’ve always loved getting my nails done, or (attempting) to do them myself — when I was younger, I had a huge collection of almost every different color of nail polish a girl could want. But over the years, the busy-ness of school, work, and social obligations have taken priority. For a long time, I only got manicures a few times during the summer, or when they were absolutely necessary, like before a wedding or a party.

But I recently discovered that a simple manicure only costs $6 at my salon of choice, and that is wonderfully cheap for a small indulgence. So, I’ve been getting a manicure every week, and I must admit, it’s great to look at my nails when they’re perfectly filed, trimmed, and polished.

So where am I going with this? I’ve been experimenting with different colors, but a few weeks ago, I finally found one color that I simply cannot do without.

From Essie’s resort collection, ‘Lapis of Luxury’ has become my all-time favorite color for spring. It may look a little drab in the bottle, but on your nails it is shiny and the most perfect color blue. It’s almost more of a lavender-ish/blue, actually. It’s just a different color than what you normally see on nails, and I absolutely love it. I’ve already gotten three manicures in a row with this color, and I get compliments from everyone.

Not to mention that it has great staying power. Essie and O.P.I. have always been my my nail polish brands of choice, but Essie is slowly creeping ahead of O.P.I. I got a manicure exactly a week ago with this color, and until yesterday, the polish was barely chipped, despite lots of showers and cooking.

So if you’re looking for a beautiful and perfect spring nail polish color, Lapis of Luxury is the best choice! I might even get it a fourth time…

Shoes I Need, Part 1

Summertime brings with it so many new and exciting fashion choices. While we are forced to hide our fabulous outfits under heavy coats and weather-friendly rain/snow boots during the winter, during the summer we can proudly show our fashion sense off to the world as we walk down the streets. It’s a time for adorable cropped tops and tiny shorts, cute dresses and skirts of all sorts. It’s also a time for new shoes.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love boots – knee-high boots, high-heeled booties, furry boots that are perfect for the cold – they’re all drool-worthy. But I REALLY love summer shoes. From flip-flops to gladiator sandals to wedges to open-toe pumps, the possibilities are endless. And the best part of it is, I don’t have to worry about stepping in a puddle of dirty slush or ice cold snow.

When I was bored the other night, I started browsing the Steve Madden website. Bad idea. I have a huge thing for floral prints this season, and I absolutely love the look on shoes. Here are several shoes that I absolutely need for the spring and summer season:

Steve Madden WILDD wedges, for $149.95

Too precious for words.

Steve Madden BEVV suede pumps in Royal Blue, for $89.95

Although suede isn’t normally considered a warm weather material, I can’t get over how much I love the color of these blue pumps. They’re so bright and fun that I can still see myself wearing them during the summer and kind of getting away with suede factor. Also, because they’re suede, they’re perfectly appropriate for fall and winter. They would just add a nice pop of color to any outfit.

Steve Madden Karmenaf platforms, for $129.95

I am so in love with these platform shoes. I love the print and the color and the fact that they will make me nice and tall.

Steve Madden Cynthea espadrilles, for $129.95

Is there a more perfect shoe for summer than espadrilles? I think not. These would go with almost anything, and the print adds an adorable component.
